Woke activism: Disney CEO fired

Bob Chapek was sacked of his position as general manager of Disney on Sunday, November 20. He gives way to Bob Iger, the former CEO who led the company from 2005 to 2020.

The company’s sluggish economy (following Covid and competition from broadcast platforms) may not be the only reason for Chapek’s departure. At the beginning of 2022, a new law caused controversy in Florida, where the Walt Disney World amusement park is located. The text prohibits teaching subjects related to sexual orientation or gender identity in primary school. Several employees of the Disney group are pushing Bob Chapek to take a stand. Eventually, Chapek telephoned Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to voice his disapproval. An initiative that will cause the Disney group to lose its administrative privilege. In April, Ron DeSantis signs a law removing the special status of Disney. It should become effective in June 2023.

Chapek was reappointed for three years the same month by Disney’s board of directors, but the tide turned against him.
