Rugby – Pro D2: international opener Elton Jantjies joins SU Agen for a year and a half

On Twitter, the president of SU Agen Jean-François Fonteneau confirmed the arrival of the South African international fly-half. Elton Jantjies, who wants to relaunch his career with a view to the 2023 World Cup, will arrive very soon in Agen where he has signed up for this end of the season and the next.

This is a huge blow achieved by the SUA. In search of “a high-level opener” next season to replace Raphaël Lagarde (retired), Bernard Goutta and Jean-François Fonteneau have chosen their man.

Elton Jantjies, 32 years old and 47 selections with South Africa, is about to join Agen. In a South African media, he said he would join France within two weeks, without revealing the name of his base. The Rugbyrama site revealed that it would be the SUA. Following, on Twitter, President Jean-François Fonteneau confirmed it.

Very happy to welcome Elton Jantjies this season and in 23/24. High quality support and experience for our young players. Can’t wait to see him wear the colors of @agen_rugby

A time announced in Toulon at the start of the season, the Varois preferred to bet on the Welshman Dan Biggar. The Springbok therefore had to review their plans and look for a new club to relaunch their career. Indeed, his summer of 2022, in addition to a Rugby Championship match in Australia, was marked by extra-sporting affairs, which tarnished his image in South Africa. With a view to competing in the 2023 World Cup in France, the player therefore wanted to quickly take up a new challenge.

He has already played at Armandie

The choice of Agen is not so trivial in the end. In the summer of 2020, Christophe Laussucq had already been very close to signing him for the SUA. The deal was almost done, but the player and his entourage had made an about-face at the last moment, finally choosing to stay with his province of Lions. And, ironically, he had joined the Section Paloise at the end of the season, participating for his first in the Top 14 to the great success of the Béarnais in Armandie at the end of the season (7-47).

A godsend for Bernard Goutta. We know that Raphaël Lagarde’s knee does not allow him to chain matches. And young Thomas Vincent (currently injured) and Emile Dayral are still learning. The quest for an opener therefore became a priority from this season. Especially since Danré Gerber, no longer in the plans, benefits from an exit voucher.

With this premature arrival of the South African international, Agen will also save time. Elton Jantjies could take advantage of this end of the season to acclimatize to his new environment, this new championship, his new teammates. Like what Agen had achieved with the captain of Tonga last season, Sonatane Takulua. Precious time saved for next season.
